There are no L’s in Leadership: 5 Shifts You Need to Make to Win in Your Leadership Role

I promise I can spell! When I say there are no L's in leadership, I'm actually referring to losers and losses - not with good leadership that is! Good leadership creates wins all around. Check out these 5 shifts you need to make to win in your leadership role!


SHIFT 1: Learning over Lagging

In the world of leadership, staying ahead of the game is EVERYTHING! You don’t want to get left behind and lose an opportunity because you had a “know-it-all” mentality. To know the way, go the way, and show the way, you have to consistently put learning at the top of your

priority list. As a leader, we want to encourage our team to have a growth mindset, work towards their goals, and reach their fullest potential. The best way to motivate them to have this outlook on life, is to show them what it looks like. Always be working on your own goals as a leader, and get comfortable feeling uncomfortable to allow yourself to grow. Winning in leadership is less about having all the answers and more about being ready to learn something new every single day. There is also a lesson here about staying humble. There is always someone in the room who knows something you don’t. Instead of getting caught up in the idea that you’ve learned everything, ask more questions and dive into the brain of others. Imagine what all we can learn together as a team!


SHIFT 2: Listening Over Lecturing

Have you ever heard that saying, “You have two ears and one mouth..”? Yeah, we do, for good reason! Being a good listener is more valuable than being the loudest person in the room. As a leader, we have some great things to share with our team but make time for questions to be asked, feedback to be shared, and ideas to flow - ideas you might have missed if you were too busy talking the whole time. This approach breaks down walls, builds trust, and allows members of your team to feel like they are a part of the overall success of the group. It’s a win-win for everyone!


SHIFT 3: Lifting Others over Lowering Standards

Imagine you’re the captain of a ship, and instead of making the ocean shallower (like, that’s even possible), you’re teaching your crew to be better sailors. As a leader, lowering your standards to make things seem easier for people may seem like a great idea but the reality is people can’t grow that way. There’s no reason to settle for less when you have incredible people on your team who might just need a little push to become the best versions of themselves. When you invest in teaching your team and empowering them to step up, you’re no longer just getting things done, you’re building a team of superstars who do things with passion. Plus, seeing your team grow makes your role as a leader even more rewarding!


SHIFT 4: Leaning In Over Leaning Back

The real MVPs in leadership are those who lean in, not those who kick back and watch others do all the work. When you dive in, ready to tackle whatever comes your way, it shows the team that you’re right there with them and that it truly is a TEAM effort. This doesn’t just earn you respect; it sets those expectations high. Leaning in also keeps you sharp, always learning, and ready for the next challenge.


SHIFT 5: Loving Over Losing

Honestly, leadership isn’t about winning or losing - it’s about the love you pour into your team and the passion you put into your work. When you lead with love, you’re not focused on the

scoreboard, you’re all about making sure everyone feels supported, valued, and part of something bigger. But guess what? When you do this, it leads to results! People just show up; they bring their heart to the game, ready to go above and beyond. So, you really want to WIN as a leader? Well, forget about the fear of losing and focus on the love. The rest will follow!
